Self-Care While Quarantined
March 18, 2021
Self-care should be an important part of everyone’s daily routine. Being consistent and responsible with one’s self-care can help maintain good physical and mental health in the future, and can also improve the way individuals are able to care for others. As a result of the current pandemic, the population’s “normal” lives have been put on pause, as it is essential to stay home and stay safe. Therefore, learning how to take care of yourself should be a priority.
Many people rely on places such as gyms, schools, therapy and counseling services to help them with their physical and mental health needs. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of these places have been forced to shut down at some point for extended periods of time. There are several different ways one can take care of themselves during the pandemic without having to physically go into a business that had previously encouraged the need for good physical and/or mental health.
Rather than going to the gym to take care of yourself physically, yoga or meditation at home is a good alternative. Practicing yoga has many benefits to not only an individual’s physical health, but it also can positively affect mental health as well. According to Psychology Today, “Yoga increases body awareness, relieves stress, reduces muscle tension, strain, and inflammation, sharpens attention and concentration, and calms and centers the nervous system.” Another way to maintain physical health while staying home is to practice gym exercises at home. For example, instead of running on a treadmill, running around the neighborhood is a great alternative; instead of taking a cycling class, going for a bike ride can also be just as beneficial. A variety of workouts can also be found online, such as Zumba, boxing, dance classes, and more, that can be done in the comfort of one’s own home.
Many individuals need a counselor or therapist to help them cope with their pre-COVID-19 “normal” life. With the arrival and duration of the pandemic, the number of people needing these services has increased, growing the overall need for counselors and therapists. Many of these offices have needed to shut down in-person services or have a limited number of available appointments. In this case, there are also several options for individuals to maintain and relieve their mental health. Journaling about one’s own feelings and reading books about self-care are some ways that may help to relieve worries and anxiety during stressful times. According to the University of Rochester Medical Center, “When you have a problem and you’re stressed, keeping a journal can help you identify what’s causing that stress or anxiety. Once you’ve identified your stressors, you can work on a plan to resolve the problems and reduce your stress.” Another way to maintain a healthy mindset is to talk. Talking to family, friends, and anyone else who will maintain a positive impact on your life and be a support system can be very beneficial to one’s mental health.
Maintaining a healthy physical and mental state is crucial to our well-being, especially when we consider the current pandemic and the additional stresses it has caused. There are several ways to keep a healthy body and a healthy mindset while staying home. Making yourself a priority should be a priority.
